Conversations with Izaak Gonzalez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Izaak Gonzalez.

Hi Izaak, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I discovered pickleball while coaching elementary physical education in Central Texas in late 2019. I signed up for “beginner play” at a local indoor recreation center that winter, and fell hard in love with the game! I met some of the nicest folks around that night, that simply embraced me and took me in. I never looked back and immediately got hooked. That day was the day my pickleball journey began!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been playing for about 5 years now and started competing about 4 1/2 years ago. My transition into the game was honestly very smooth and it’s always been rooted in fun and pure joy. The game has changed alot since I first picked up a paddle, but the continuous personal challenge remains constant. I enjoy being a student of the game and watching pickleball in person or on the screen, has helped my game take shape and form.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I started teaching public physical education back in 2012 and coaching has always given me a sense of purpose. Helping others find their way brings me so much gratification and bliss. Before teaching, I was a proud member of the U.S. Armed Forces. From 2007 to 2011, I respectively served in the United States Coast Guard and absolutely loved every minute of it. Semper Paratus is our creed and our motto and serving my country and my community was the ultimate endeavor.

Pickleball coaching and instructing is currently my full time job, and taking a risk on a growing game I love is the path I’m on. I pride myself in helping grow the sport and giving back to my community. I love building positive relationships with people and players from all over and connecting with new faces as well. Being bilingual and having a strong spanish background, I also take pride in helping grow the game globally and internationally. Pouring into underserved communities and areas is also a soft spot for me to help with.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Spent hours outdoors being creative, building things, playing, and seeking adventure solo or with my siblings, friends, or neighbors. I grew up attempting to play every sport in the book and enjoyed movement, exploration, and wonder. I always dreamed of becoming a professional athlete or an oceanographer and grew up loving all the sciences! Even as I’ve aged, I feel extremely youthful and still enjoy doing kid like things… such as biking, swimming, hiking, camping, dancing, etc…
